The biggest reason for big auto's reluctance is that electric cars, under their own brands, would cripple their current money-makers (gas vehicles). Why would people buy current tech when something better is coming out next year? Manufacturers would have to suck up, literally, billions of dollars of losses as they refit. And the longer they wait, the more expensive the change over.

So, not sure why you missed the most obvious reason that legacy manufacturers can't touch Tesla. Money. How many hundreds of trillions of dollars a year does the oil and ICE vehicle auto industry make every year? If I was an auto company CEO, I would have a shitload of shares in as many oil companies as I could. Why? Because my cars are then using MY gas too. I get paid twice. If I was an oil company CEO, I would have a shitload of shares in auto companies, especially the ones with a history of being protected by gov'ts who gave them suitcases full of money when they ran the car companies into the ground. Again, I'd be getting paid twice. Again, this is HUNDREDS OF TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS per year. On top of this, is history. The parts and auto industry are pretty steady state. There are innovations to be sure, but it's pretty much steady state process of building vehicles. It's a known entity. Production is stable, profits are good, automation is increasing and getting rid of workers. Any "dabbling" legacy auto companies do in the electric game are just public relation programs to catch the interest of the "green morons" who think buying everything plastic and then throwing he garbage in a recycling bin, is actually recycling. They won't push hard at electric vehicles until they think they can make as much profit making electric or hybrid vehicles as they have been getting by making ICE vehicles. They won't go hard into electric vehicles until they think they can recoup the trillions of dollars of profit they're going to lose from oil usage dropping. After all, unless they can find some way to build huge walls in the sky to block the sun and crooked politicians to make it legal, people all over the world will be able to make their own electric vehicle fuel just by setting up wind mills and photoelectric panels. I'm not a fanboy of Musk. I think he's too much of a dreamer/innovator yet, so far, to reach the level of sociopath that the legacy builders have operated at for many decades. At the same time, the same hundreds of trillions of dollars being earned by the oil companies, as well as coal and nuclear generation (something in the range of 900+ trillion dollars a year worldwide), are the reason why there is so much anti windmill and photoelectric power generation policies, laws, by-laws, myths, lies and mis-information, the majority of which is being generated and paid for by these three industries. How much can these parasitic corporations charge for wind or sunlight? Not much, yet. People are stupid though, and the corporations know this. The corporations know exactly what PR and advertising buttons to push to make the mouth breathing public act like parrots and regurgitate their corporate propaganda for them. They're in business to make a profit, like Musk (Musk is just a little less sociopathic than the legacy builders). They're in business to make billions, not to make affordable or safe or reliable transportation, and they certainly don't give a fuck about "green" unless that meme is backed up by a huge sustainable profit in their books. So, do another show. Do a video or 5 on the REAL reason why the legacy companies aren't going after the EVE market harder. Follow the money.

I don't understand how tesla is winning here. First off there not profitable and never have been. When other car companies find that they are not going to make money they scrap it or they do what is needed so the project is. Elan does not seem to mind loosing money or lets say not making any money for research. And I don't get your math lets say tesla made 400,000 which is more than they made. The EV market sold 1,625,000 thats less than 40% not 70% you're claiming. The bottom line is there not MAKING ANY MONEY and they make like no cars 400,000 is less than a percent. Last thing is why would any company move to the in house production of parts if it is not a profitable business plan. We already bailed out the car companies before I don't want to again because the follow the way Elan does business.

The software part is interesting. every car now relays on software ( including ICE ). Like Toyota Rav4 2019 failed Moose test. Sometime later it did complete and testers asked, what they did. The answer was simple - Did some software updates. Old car manufacturers make a profit from selling new cars each year, Tesla makes from selling Service. Pretty much all tech companies now main income is from some kind of service. The funny part is that legacy car manufacturers have the capability to do that too, they have strong programmers and everything, yet they don't see that now.

Why would anyone want to "take Tesla down"? There is a lot of difference between failing and beginning. No one wants to bring Tesla down. Will Tesla be around in 20 years? Who knows? Will some other company have "taken them down" if they are not around. No. Tesla is a fairly mediocre car, and very overpriced. In five years, Tesla will be a footnote when VW, Toyota and Hyundai/Kia have a selection of pure electrics and hybrids to choose from.

Fanboy's, plain and simple. The quality, and residual values are lousy. And the 'Green' concept, while slightly better, is not all that great either from the extracting of the raw materials, to producing the electricity, to disposing of the entire car. The real reason is because of Elon. If you have an engineer that can run a company and then you have a dangerous weapon on your hand. Not only from an innovation point of view in terms of having such a big lead on all the competition but also the charisma to raise funding and marketing. Furthermore all of the competition have no idea how to pull this off because Tesla is more of a tech company instead of a car company. Whereas the car companies have to learn how to adapt to this EV tech influenced market. It takes someone as incredible as Elon to pull this off.

There is a fundamental difference between tesla & the legacy brands. It has nothing to do with the products believe it or not. Even if Ford or GM had equivalent product at an equal price point. So what is it you say? TESLA Business model. legacy brands sell there cars at wholesale to a dealer. For them to compete , they would actually have to change there business model. Aside from that, they do also sell solar & battery energy storage.

Except for the Nissan Leaf, no automaker keeps producing an EV enough to make a 2nd generation. Not that the Leaf is very good in 2020, but if Nissan can get a lower cost source for improved batteries the Leaf could become a better Tesla competitor. Its all in the batteries, and the price.

Hello donut from the uk. I have an idea for a feature you could do, and cover Tickford and their production of hot fast fords. I owned a Ford Racing puma, a commercial disaster for Ford failing to hit the 1000 cars to be made (500 uk only models made). It was over priced not that quick, made no sense..... other than the fact it was a hoot to drive and pumped up styling. It was the forefather of the MK 1 focus RS which his was also finished by Tickford, (I have also owned). Tickford made hot Capris (British mustang from 60’s/70’s).
