One of the most common ways to increase performance on a naturally aspirated engine is to install an exhaust header. They aren’t too expensive, and the install should be pretty easy on the miata. But how much power do they actually make? Today we’re gonna install a set of headers find out!

No hate but having sharp bend in the intake can hinder flow too though that intake on the Miata sits right over the headers so would have to bring it to the intake side. (Cooler side)

Headers alone as a hp maker has always been contraversial. Personally I wouldn't expect to get big gains on a stock engine with just headers. They look cool, but I treat them as a "supporting mod". Headers are great too help get everything out of a big cam or a supercharger.

My Mazda MX6 with the 2.5L v6 24 valve was a night and day difference when I added headers and larger exhaust pipe all the way to the back. Maybe The Miata should've gotten that engine lol

i got headers for 600 aud plus labour and couldn't tell the difference in power, plus i didn't like the slightly more rough sound the v8 made. Not worth it for me.

You say an intake and exhaust makes a little more hp, Engineering Explained says so as well, and many people all over the forums agree. Then why do people still say they don't? I drive a Subaru and I'd like to make the small 2.5 l engine a little more zippy. Not gonna win and drag races, I know, but I think it'll be enough to make a difference. It's just hard to make a decision when you don't know a lot about cars and you have many videos and articles pointing you in every direction.

Not sure but if the headers were nickel plated or copper plated before the chrome, they might not have turned that blue purple color, but stay more chrome.looking,

headers and intake are useless, the only real way to make power for NA motors is by a cam. With cam then the others will come in to play.

First off you can ,but not recommend to run after market headers without head up grades ,porting and polishing or to run catalytic converter with headers

The only difference with your aftermarket header is the runners are slightly slightly longer.... that's it. If you take the shiny look away from it, the 2 headers would look almost identical. Not worth the money.

To be fair, the miata had a decent header-style manifold before so gains wouldn't be great. Had you went from a log-style manifold however, that would have been an easy 5 hp.

Going from what’s essentially a mid length header to a long tube isnt gonna make much of a difference, start with a car that has those terrible stamped steel headers

Why do they always do this? They slap bolt ons without a follow up tune and expect the car to just do something amazing with it. You are basically fooling the car with stock parameters; no matter how much it “re-learns” on its own, It’s always going to assume your exhaust is stock and adjust accordingly for stock exhaust output. That’s why your gains were much less than you anticipated. After bolt ons a proper tune is a MUST to actually get the horsepower out of the labor you put in. Your testing procedures are wrong and I guarantee you that you can pull at least 2-3 more horsepower out of that upgrade with a proper tune.
